October 23, Friday, 9:00 p.mâ¦looking
Two hours later we tried the last motel near the track. So far we'd had no luck.
"Good evening," Bailey flipped her badge open. "We're looking for someone who might've paid cash for a room, or who might've flashed it around some."
"Not tonight," the clerk grinned, "It's all credit cards here, y'know, with bills that go home." Levity with the law was a result of the relief of finding out they weren't there because of you.
Bailey ignored him.
"How about recently?" she prodded him for memory.
The clerk gave up on humor. "Look lady, this is a cash kind of place."
"One that stuck out, though?" She persisted.
I stifled a yawn. My head had the dull, foggy feel that comes with endless slogging work. We had been to every motel near a highway exit so far. None of them remembered anyone in particular.
"We had one, a guy, some nights back who seemed a little off," he said.
"Oh?" Bailey craned her head back to find and take note of the address on a wallsign facing us.
"And?" she prompted him.
"He paid for his room with fives. I thought he might skip, you know. But he peeled them off real slow, like he didn't want to give 'em up. Kinda weird, fives don't do much for most folks, but this guy ran 'em through his fingers like he didn't want to let 'em go." The clerk frowned.
"Can you tell me what night that was?" she asked him.
He opened a book and read down one column. "It was a Saturday, the seventeenth." He paused. "And it was late for check-in, dead quiet, you know, like now."
"What did he look like?" she asked him.
He frowned. "I'm trying to remember. Thin, dark, not built too big. Average."
"Nothing special?"
"No," he shrugged. "Just a guy."
"Thank you, that's all for now." She flipped her notebook shut. Bailey turned and quirked an eyebrow at me. For a moment her look reminded me so much of Papa that I didn't know what to think.
